| The Sand Shredder is an unlicensed All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV), which is also a Matchbox Original. It is for most into this hobby is an underrated vehicle. It’s not as scaled as the usual 1/64 scale Matchbox Car, but it stands out to appeal to those who are into the great outdoors.
It’s one of those Matchbox Originals that gets attention from a specific market that is into 4x4 or into this type of recreational vehicle. This is before Matchbox acquired the Polaris license, who produce real-life ATVs. There have been unlicensed vehicles similar to the San Shredder, but this one certainly is a Matchbox ATV! |
This is certainly shredding the beaches or the dunes of the harshest deserts. The Sand Shredder was designed as a multi-purpose vehicle, and it’s not just an unlicensed ATV with all the bells and whistles that can be used by lifeguards on the beach or a police patrol vehicle in the countryside.
The original concept of an ATV goes back to the late 1800s, and the evolution from a motorized bicycle was not realized until the 1980s. The concept started as a horseless carriage for road use, evolving into a farm vehicle with many interpretations, from a three-wheel motorbike to a “quad bike.”
Shredding Inspiration
The Sand Shredder is an amalgamation of different types of ATVs, and to avoid paying for the license from an actual manufacturer, they put this out to represent what an All-Terrain Vehicle would be in the world of Matchbox. But this is not the first time the brand has ever produced an unlicensed ATV.
There have been several unlicensed ATVs that Matchbox has produced as far as the early 2000s. There were even 6x6 versions, but they were slowly getting discontinued due to the cost of producing vehicles with six wheels. This was the last unlicensed ATV that was produced before the Polaris RZR was released in 2020.

Off-Road Off-Scale Ride
Despite being the largest among the Matchbox Original ATVs, the Sand Shredder had a long lifespan span being produced almost every year, from exploring the desert to even being part of the Jurassic World subline despite not existing or appearing in the films. The difference with this ATV is that it has a lot of storage compartments.
The Sand Shredder can be used in various services, as previously mentioned, with it being a Lifeguard’s vehicle. It’s a non-licensed vehicle that is part of a themed set for Matchbox, as it’s the second-to-last inclusion in a 5-pack with the Rocky Peak-themed vehicles used in the mountains released in 2020.
Overall, the Sand Shredder is a good representation of what a non-licensed ATV has that branded ones don’t. But despite all of this, it’s considered a peg warmer with the last one being a single-carded release in 2018 that can still be found in retail stores all over the world.
It’s the only one in the River Adventures 5-Pack that holds its own as unique from the other four vehicles that came with the series, due to its bright blue and orange colour combinations. It’s still a “fun” vehicle that kids would like to roll on the sand, and as mentioned, the colour would be great if it were toned down to be grounded like a real ATV.
