River Adventures | Mercedes-Benz U300

Mercedes-Benz has been known for luxury cars and SUVs but has rarely ever been known for tractors, Lorries, Trucks, or heavy machinery. But Matchbox is known to produce licensed castings of everything that would fit into their 1/64 scale basic range that continues to cater not only just cars. But this also includes other types of vehicles such as trucks and even boats.

Speaking of trucks, Mercedes-Benz has produced some of these models through Matchbox basic and special themed series of vehicles. This includes the Mercedes-Benz U300 light truck that has been produced before going back to the Lesney era.

But this casting is fairly new debuting in 2007 until 2009, which made its return in 2017 with this casting with no significant changes or retooling. The return of the Unimog 300 or simply designated U300 as part of the River Adventures 5-pack was the first time that the Mercedes-Benz licensed have returned. It took eight long years for this casting to return, and it is finally here with a brand-new colour at the same time retaining the last livery used from the previously released way back in 2009 (more of this later).

There have been other castings produced by other brands representing the Mercedes-Benz Unimog, but this version is very popular for its cultural significance as the design to the original 1948 Boehringer Unimog 70200 aesthetics and silhouette is very much taking inspiration for the current line of Unimog trucks that were ever produced that has been part of its heritage and identity.

Reliable Light Truck

Despite not exactly following the exact scale of the truck to fit in with the 1/64 range of basic vehicles for Matchbox this casting is not entirely small for its appearance. The actual truck is bigger than you think and it is heavily used as part of either construction-related jobs or transporting cargo in remote places.

The U300 is still considered a light vehicle that can still haul in cargo or assist in towing other types of tools for construction. The casting has no changes in retooling since Matchbox lost the rights license to produce it after 2009. But the return in 2017 still carries over the last deco/livery that was used in the previous release albeit not the same colour namely the HDR logo, which stands for Highway Debris Removal.

This vehicle is of course based on the Mercedes-Benz Unimog 300 Light Truck by Matchbox.

Key Features of the Mercedes-Benz U300 below:

  • Year Release: 2017 | River Adventures 5-Pack
  • Base Color: Tan | Metal
  • Window: Light Blue Tint
  • Tampo: 728, Black, Blue, and White, HDR (Highway Debris Removal) | Unpainted Front/Rear light details
  • Interior: Brown

Serviceable Tan-talizing Truck

There have been several versions of the Unimog that Matchbox has ever produced with the majority of the other models as part of Jurassic World-themed vehicles. But this one has been a stand-out due to its very familiar look that has never come close to being part of the series. But there’s a prototype casting that never became available that features the deco/livery from the vehicles appearing in Jurassic World.

This new colour for 2017 in its tan metal body with the interior and mid-part of the truck in brown that is also the interior, while the base that holds it together that has a built-in tow/hitch is in light grey is also made of plastic., the casting is 60% plastic and 40% metal with a light tint window is one of the rare castings that manage to be well-detailed despite some of the Matchbox’s castings are retooled or retired due to the design can’t be changed.

Overall, the casting for the Unimog 300 has been sporadically produced since Matchbox renewed its license from Mercedes-Benz having been part of several 5-packs that followed its reintroduction in the River Adventures set, there’s more of this truck to go through with new deco/liveries that will be released in in the future.

Mercedes-Benz U300 is part of the River Adventures 5-pack released in 2017, which was acquired during a special 20% off sale at Kids Depot last May 2023 in Ayala Malls Market Market for ₱ 640.20 Pesos ($ 17.63 | $ 11.29 USD**). Matchbox is distributed in the Philippines by Richwell Club.
