HW Nightburnerz | '68 Corvette - Gas Monkey Garage

The Chevrolet Corvette is an iconic car and currently, there have been eight generations in design. But in the world of Hot Wheels, there have been several variations and iterations of this beloved car from General Motors. All of them have their own stories and that’s what makes this car legendary.

This featured model is based on the third generation or known as the “C3,” which was produced from 1968 to 1982. The aesthetics and overall appearance maintain the consistency and design carried over from the previous generation with a new body style.

But this Vette is not just a car as this Hot Wheels version is customized by the Monkey Garage team and was even documented on Fast N’ Loud!

In 2016, Hot Wheels was commissioned to have the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette built by Monkey Garage. It was documented on the hit show Fast N’ Loud and featured super craftsmanship and expertise that went into this one-of-a-kind build that they named Midas Monkey as the 1/64 scale version was designed by the late Ryu Asada.

The debut year was based on the real car in 2017 under the sub-theme HW Screen Time. But for the following year (2018) the colours come in Metalflake Blue with yellow-orange fiery graphics on the sides, since 2018 is celebrating 50 years of Hot Wheels this makes sense for this release to be in this look.

The second release was included for the 2023 release with two alternate colours. This one comes in Metalflake Dark Red with white stripes and “Hot Wheels” in Japanese on the side and roof that also includes sponsor logos on the side. The interior is chrome that has a tinted black window while retaining the FC3 wheels from last year.

Unfortunately, just like the debut year the front and rear are unpainted, and what’s unique with this casting that attracts so much demand is the design itself having its engine exposed through the plastic tinted window covering that reveals to have the RB26 engine from a Nissan Skyline in place of the L24E inline-6.

This car is of course based on the third-generation Chevrolet Corvette that was customized and Modified by Gas Monkey Garage.

Fiery Blue Beauty

There’s something about the ’68 Corvette being an attractive car since this is based on the 1968 model and the first “Sweet Sixteen” cars produced by Mattel for the Hot Wheels brand also features the same model, but are known as the Custom Corvette. Although the original Hot Wheels model was iconic itself this Monkey Garage version aka Midas Monkey takes it to greater heights.

This model mimics the look and aesthetics of the original ’68 Vette but with a Hot Wheels design as this model has larger wheels in the rear and in the carded package on the front indicating that you can race it to the orange tracks. Despite the scale being smaller than the OG Corvette that was introduced in the first Hot Wheels set of cars the design has fine lines and looks good in metalflake blue.

The sleek look on the front coupled with the fiery graphics on the sides really makes this car stand out despite not having details in the rear like unpainted taillights and no license plate that was presented in the debut year.

Comparing it with the Orange Brand’s take on a modern ’15 Corvette Stingray based on the Dubai Fire Car livery complete with roof lights built as part of the tinted windows, which makes sense why the colours and graphic pops so well as Hot Wheels is known for bright coloured cars.

Overall, the ’68 Corvette by Gas Monkey Garage is iconic on its own being a customized take on the legendary classic car with a big engine on its bonnet as exhaust sticking out from what were the original vents near the front wheels. It looks fast and certainly, you can imagine in your head that it must be loud too!

’68 Corvette – Gas Monkey Garage is part of the HW Nightburnerz segment series and overall 041/365 released for the 2018 year, which was acquired at Big W in Westfield Marion for $2.00 AUD (₱ 74.44 Pesos | $ 1.34 USD**). Hot Wheels is distributed in Australia by Mattel Pty., LTD. based in Richmond, Victoria.
